Three Ways to Volunteer

Academy of Hope needs volunteers in two main areas: teaching and tutoring. You can also help with special event planning. Teaching and tutoring require a three-hour commitment each week

All of our volunteers are asked to attend two Saturday morning workshops. workshops for the SUMMER term will be:

Part 1
May 31, 2008 (9 a.m. - 1 p.m.)
Part 2
June 21, 2008 (9 a.m. - 12 noon)

Spring classes start March 25. If you are interested in volunteering for the SPRING term, please call (202-269-6623) or send an e-mail (volunteer@aohdc.org) by March 17.

1.Teachers- At the Hope, we offer classes three times a day, four days a week. We need volunteers to help teach these classes which include basic and G.E.D.-level classes in math, reading, writing, social studies, and science. We also offer a course in computer basics. The times we offer classes are:

9:00 a.m. -12:15 p.m.
1:30 p.m. - 3: 30 p.m.
6:30 p.m. - 8: 30 p.m.

Most volunteers team teach with one other volunteer. Classes usually have about 6-15 students and all textbooks and lesson plan materials are available at the school.

2. Tutoring in several subjects

Tutoring is a 1.5-3 hour commitment where the tutor can meet at the school or at a mutually convenient location. Tutoring is usually with one or two students. Volunteers help with specific areas of trouble for the student.

3. Special event support

The Academy's Board of Directors holds fundraising events including a Spelling Bee, a wine-tasting event and an annual fundraising breakfast. We always need help, ranging from decorating to providing food to soliciting sponsorships.
