LITERACY CONNECTION Literacy Connection, Volunteer Edition is published each term by our full-time volunteer interns for our community volunteer teachers and tutors. The newsletter reports on activities at the school, such as field trips and book clubs, as well as upcoming events, such as our next graduation or volunteer training. Newsletters often include student writings and teaching tips or information on resources and training opportunities for teachers and tutors. Highlights from Winter 2 2007 issue Academy of Hope said good-bye to two long-time staff members, Kathryn Sommers, and Rachel Lewis, who were our finance-development coordinator and career counselor respectively. On the bright side, two wonderful people have joined our staff-Melissa Hensel, who is our new career counselor, and Brian McNamee, our new finance manager. The next graduation is scheduled for June 22, 2007 at 7pm. It will be held in Crawford Hall, close to the new school site. For directions, or to RSVP, please call 202-269-6623. Many long-time students will be graduating, and it promises to be an event to remember. The following students have recently passed the G.E.D.: Fiteh Yelekal, Edward Branham, Teia Scott, Jampa Sharchok, Lionel Shepherd, and J'Ron Brown. Maggie Holland has completed the E.D.P. The Academy of Hope book club has just finished The House
on Mango Street by Sandra Cisneros. If you work with morning or afternoon
