What is the G.E.D.?

The General Education Development test (GED) is often called the high school equivalency test because the certificate you receive is recognized by most employers and colleges as the equivalent of a high school diploma.

The GED is a 7 hour 35 minute test which must be taken at the University of the District of Columbia. There are five sections on the test which include:
  • Language Arts, Reading
  • Social Studies
  • Science
  • Mathematics
  • Language Arts, Writing

In order to pass the GED test, you must earn a total of 2250 points with no subject score less than 410. For example, if you earn a total of 2250 points but your math score is only 400, you will not pass the GED test.

In order to pass a subject test, you must earn 450 points on that test. For example, if you do not pass the whole GED but you earn 450 points in science and in social studies, then you do not need to re-take those tests. Passing scores remain good for three years. If you do not pass all five tests within those three years, you will have to re-take the entire test.

Currently, you may take the test in one sitting or in two parts over two days.
