Become a Volunteer

Our volunteers are a part of the backbone of Academy of Hope. They teach, help put on events and assist the staff with the school’s daily operations. We are grateful for their commitment and contribution to The Academy of Hope each day. The impact that our volunteers have on the lives of individuals and the community is exceptional. You can see it in the students’ accomplishments and the positive outcomes of our programs.
There Are Many Ways to Help
Get started volunteering for Academy of Hope today. We are always looking for new teachers and tutors or help with special projects. Currently we are seeking volunteers for the following positions:
- Tutors
Tutors usually work with learners in the areas of writing, math or reading. However, if a learner is particularly close to passing the GED test, tutoring sessions might become more focused on social studies, science or literature. Some tutors work with a learner in one subject area, while other tutors work with learners in whatever area is causing difficulty for their learner that week.
- EDP Buddies
EDP Buddies assist learners as they work their way through the External Diploma Program. Since the program requires students to work independently, an EDP buddy is somewhere between a tutor and a guide. A buddy may help a student to locate the resources they need or identify skills (such as math or writing) that the student will need to practice before moving on.
- Teachers
Teachers work with small groups of learners (usually between 6-15 learners) in the areas of basic reading, math, writing, literature, science, and social studies. Much of the GED test relies heavily on a learner’s reading ability, so teaching reading comprehension is more the focus than teaching learners to memorize facts related to a particular subject area.
