DEBORAH PUSHIA

I am 38 years old, and I am ready to start my life! Now that I am finished with the External Diploma Program, I am going to go on to become a mortician, a career I have wanted since I was in high school. But before I could go to college, I needed to finish high school first. I came to the Academy of Hope to get my GED, but changed instead to the External Diploma Program because I could do most of my work at home. The work was not easy, especially since I hadn't been in school for so long, but I did it!

I got a good job after graduating, working as a security officer, and I want to get more settled financially before I start college. I have been accepted to the University of the District of Columbia and plan to start classes in Mortuary Science in the next couple of years. After I go to UDC and get a degree, I will be able to work in a funeral home and be the director of my own funeral home one day. I pat myself on the back every night because I went back to school. I have proved to myself and my daughter that I have what it takes to achieve my own educational goals and to be the parent that she needs. I will be the first generation in my family to go to college - but I will not be the last.

When I was 15 years old, my mother was diagnosed with cancer, and I dropped out of school in order to work. In late 2003 I decided to enroll myself in school to pick up where I left off. When I arrived at Academy of Hope, it was not what I expected. The staff was extremely kind and courteous and their teaching methods helped me a lot. I went on to complete the External Diploma Program (EDP), and I received my diploma in 2005.

I enrolled at Lincoln Technical Institute this fall, and I am studying to become an HVAC-R Technician (Heat/Ventilation/Air-conditioning and Recovery). I'm currently holding a 3.6 GPA and going strong. Lincoln Tech's HVAC-R course is rated among the highest in the nation, and I know that this program will help me reach my goals. After receiving my degree, I plan to continue my education to acquire a masters in the HVAC-R field.
