The Community Foundation's Third Annual Spirit of Giving Guide Highlights 15 Workforce Development Programs - Nonprofits Selected for the Guide Each Receive $10,000 -

Washington, DC - The Community Foundation for the National Region has released its third annual Spirit of Giving Guide, which this year focuses on the critical issue of employment for low-income people. The 15 nonprofits profiled in the guide - each of which will receive a $10,000 grant from The Community Foundation - are small organizations that were selected by an committee of experts for their capacity, financial standing, strong leadership, and demonstrated outcomes.

The 2005-2006 Spirit of Giving Guide is subtitled "Jobs, Families and the American Dream in the Washington, D.C. Region." Organizations highlighted in the Guide range from those providing training for jobs in specific sectors, such as healthcare, to those providing more general supports to help people become "work ready," such as language and literacy training, clothing for interviews, and help finding stable housing. All of the programs have operating budgets under $2 million, a criteria that is intended to support groups without the organizational resources to do extensive promotion on their own.

"The workforce development programs featured in this year's Spirit of Giving Guide are giving people an opportunity to earn a living wage, to create a better future for their families, and become full participants in our region's economy," said Terri Lee Freeman, president of The Community Foundation. "We're excited that this year, we are able to award $10,000 to each of the nonprofits selected for the Guide. We hope our investment in these outstanding programs will strengthen their capacity and encourage others to offer similar levels of support.

" The Washington region boasts one of the nation's most vibrant economies, but many people are not benefiting from this economic vitality. In the midst of prosperity, poverty rates in the region are increasing. Between 1990 and 2000, the number of people living in poverty in the region increased by 32 percent, and thousands of residents are unable to move beyond low-skilled, low-paying jobs to more sustainable incomes and careers. The Guide identifies barriers that prevent low-income adults and youth from securing employment.

The fifteen organizations selected for the 2005-2006 Spirit of Giving Guide are:

  • 3rd & Eats Restaurant
  • Newcomer Community Service Center
  • Academy of Hope
  • Senior Employment Resources
  • Business Development Assistance Group
  • STRIVE DC
  • Carlos Rosario International Career Ctr.
  • Suited for Change
  • Enterprise Staffing Solutions
  • Urban Alliance Foundation
  • Infant/Toddler Family Day Care
  • Virginia Justice Center
  • Jobs for Homeless People
  • Workforce Organizations for Regional Collaboration
  • Jubilee Jobs
